Five South Koreans have won prizes at the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition under way in Moscow.

Bass vocalist Park Jong-min won first prize in the men’s voice category while soprano Seo Sun-young won the top spot in the women’s voice category. Son Yeol-eum and Cho Seong-jin won second and third prizes in the piano competitions while Lee Jehye secured the third spot in the violin category.

South Korea’s results mark the first time for one country, other than host Russia, to produce so many winners in the competition.

The event is one of the world’s top three international music competitions. The last time South Korea finished strong was in 1974 when Chung Myung-whun came in second place in the piano category.

The competition, which began on June 14, will end on Saturday.
