The South Korean government is demanding Malaysia to release a South Korean university student who was arrested and is being detained in the Southeast Asian country.
A Foreign Ministry official said that a senior at a university in Gwangju, South Korea, was arrested by Malaysian police on June 27th in Kuala Lumpur. The official said she is being investigated on allegations of violating immigration law. The 24-year-old female, identified as Song, had been participating in an internship at a liberal non-governmental organization in Malaysia.
Two days before her arrest, Song had taken a bus with the NGO staff to an anti-government protest held in southern Malaysia and arrested during police inspections. She was released soon after, but arrested again on June 27th.
The ministry official said the South Korean consulate in Malaysia informed the local police that there are no problems with Song’s visa, contrary to police allegations.
