The United States says North Korea has shown no indication it is ready to meet terms for holding follow-up bilateral discussions on denuclearization.
State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters Tuesday that the U.S. has not seen signs from Pyongyang that it's prepared to meet the conditions the U.S. has set forward to resume dialogue. The North and the U.S. held high-level talks in late July in New York.
She made the remark after being asked if a visit to Washington by South Korea’s top nuclear envoy, Wi Sung-lac, is related to efforts to engage in future talks with the North. Nuland stressed that Wi’s visit is part of the U.S.’s regular, ongoing close consultations with South Korea on issues related to the North.
Nuland also said that the U.S. has repeatedly stressed that it wants progress in inter-Korean relations. She said she hopes the North will fulfill its obligations.
On the possible provision of U.S. food aid to the North, Nuland said there have been no updates on the matter.
