A senior U.S. legislator says he is optimistic U.S. Congress will pass three pending trade deals with South Korea, Panama and Colombia "very soon."
Kevin Brady, the chairman of a House subcommittee on trade, made the remark during a lecture in Washington Tuesday.
Brady said the passage of the trade accords would highly depend on whether the Senate will swiftly deal with bills on extending the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program and renewing the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program.
Brady said it is his understanding that the White House, Senate leaders and House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner have agreed on a "very tight process" for pushing forward the trade pacts and a separate bill to renew the TAA program.
Brady also expressed hope that the Senate would pass the bill on renewing the TAA program as early as next week and send it to the House for approval, as such a move would kick-start efforts for the White House to submit the trade accords.
