The White House says the United States will continue to sanction North Korea until the North fulfills its denuclearization obligations.
The White House made the statement in a fact sheet on advancing U.S. interests at the United Nations that was disclosed ahead of the 66th Session of the U.N. General Assembly.
The fact sheet stated the U.S. secured the adoption of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1874 in response to Pyongyang’s 2009 nuclear test.
It read that the resolution established “a tough array of sanctions, including asset freezes, financial sanctions, a broad-based embargo on arms exports and imports, and an unprecedented framework for the inspection of suspect vessels.”
The fact sheet noted that since the resolution's adoption countries have intercepted and seized tons of illegal cargo, indicating those nations are taking their obligation to enforce these tough new measures seriously.
The document also stressed that Washington will continue to seek the sanctions implementation “until there is concrete, verifiable progress on denuclearization.”
