KBS Live Coverage on Annapurna Wins ABU Award

A team at the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) won the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) sports award for its live coverage of female mountaineer Oh Eun-sun’s scaling of Annapurna.

The program, titled “KBS Live Special: Live from Annapurna,” captured history in the making, showing Oh scaling the steep peak to break the world record on April 27, 2010, for being the first woman to scale all 14 of the world’s highest mountains.

The ABU Awards were held in New Delhi, India on Monday night.

KBS broadcast the program live twice in the afternoon, for a total of four hours and 40 minutes. It illustrated KBS’ world-best broadcasting and live broadcast technology.

KBS was the only South Korean broadcaster to win awards on Monday night. The KBS Technical Research Institute, which developed the world’s first transmission technology for terrestrial 3D televisions, also won a prize for the best research paper in the technical area.
