British Students Protest Tuition Hike

Some ten-thousand university students and lecturers have staged a protest in downtown London against the British government’s policy to raise tuition fees.

The protesters held a rally at the University College London campus on Wednesday where they denounced the British government’s decision to cut subsidies to colleges and increase tuition.

As part of its belt-tightening efforts, the British government has allowed universities to raise tuition from three-thousand pounds up to nine-thousand pounds to compensate for the loss of government subsidies.

Accordingly, most universities, including the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, will be collecting nine-thousand pounds in tuition from students starting next year.
