The Arab League has taken action against Syria in an attempt to end its government's crackdown on antigovernment protests.
The league confirmed its decision on Wednesday to suspend the membership of Syria for its failure to end its bloody crackdown on the nation’s eight-month uprising. The league also said that it will impose economic sanctions on Syria if it doesn’t end the bloodshed.
The Associated Press and other international news outlets said the Arab League delivered the warning in a statement released by foreign ministers of its member countries who met in the Moroccan capital of Rabat on Wednesday.
Qatari Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jassim said that on November second, the Arab League sent a proposal to Syria to end violence on antigovernment protesters and restore peace. He urged the Syrian government to sign the proposal and end its crackdown on those in opposition to the government.
The Qatari foreign minister said that Syria will face economic sanctions if it does not respond to the proposal.
