The Third Committee of the U.N. General Assembly has adopted for the seventh straight year a resolution urging an improvement in North Korea's human rights.

The committee, which handles social, humanitarian and cultural issues, adopted the resolution by a vote of 112 to 16 with 55 abstentions.

Jointly submitted by 52 countries, including South Korea and the members of the European Union, the resolution will be voted on during the U.N. General Assembly’s plenary session next month.

For the first time, the resolution raised issue with the North’s political prison camps. It also expressed concerns over suspended inter-Korean reunions of separated families and urged for an agreement for such reunions to be held regularly.

The U.N. has adopted a resolution on North Korea’s human rights situation every year since 2005. South Korea has been cosponsoring the resolution since 2008.
