Egyptian Cabinet Offers to Resign

Egypt’s civilian Cabinet has submitted its resignation to the nation's military-led government.

The military leadership has been taking control of Egypt since former President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February this year.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Essam Sharaf said Monday that the Cabinet offered to resign en masse to the ruling Supreme Council for the Armed Forces.

The collective resignation comes after four days of massive demonstrations against the military leadership that began in Cairo last Friday. Security forces have responded to the antigovernment rallies with violent crackdowns.

Egypt’s state-run TV network said that the military council rejected the Cabinet’s resignation offer. However, Arabic satellite TV Al Jazeera put out a conflicting report, saying that the mass resignation has been accepted.

The antigovernment demonstrations have been now spreading to other regions of Egypt, such as Alexandria, Suez and Qena.
