Euro Zone May Create IMF Fund to Resolve Debt Crisis

A German daily reports that the governments of euro zone nations are considering funneling hundreds of billions of euros to the International Monetary Fund to resolve the region’s fiscal crisis.

The “Die Welt” said the central banks of the 17-nation euro zone will pay into the IMF which would then finance rescue programs for some countries in the economic block, including Italy and Spain.

The German daily also said that the U.S. Federal Reserve is said to be willing to contribute.

It added that US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will visit Europe this week to discuss the issue with euro zone officials.

Reuters and other international news outlets previously reported that the central banks of euro zone countries reached an agreement to allocate 270 billion U.S. dollars to the IMF to help end the sovereign debt crisis in the region.
