Japan to Return 1,200 Korean Royal Books Tuesday

Japan is prepared to return Tuesday 12-hundred Korean royal books it looted during its colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

The South Korean Embassy in Japan said on Monday that books held by the Japanese Imperial Household Agency will be returned to South Korea under a bilateral agreement on the return of the Korean royal books that went into effect in June. The books include a record of royal ceremonies and rituals called the “Joseon Wangsil Uigwe.”

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda visited Seoul last month and returned five other books.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan affirmed in a statement last year that Tokyo would return the books and cultural assets that his country took from the Korean Peninsula during the colonial period.
