NASA Confirms Existence of Earth-like Planet

The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) says its Kepler mission has confirmed the existence of an Earth-like planet where liquid water could exist.

The newly confirmed planet, Kepler-22b, is the smallest that has been found in the middle of the habitable zone of a star similar to our sun. The area has been dubbed the Goldilocks Zone by astronomers since temperatures are ideal for life and water does not freeze or boil there.

Kepler-22b is located 600 light-years away from Earth and its orbit of 290 days around a sun-like star resembles the Earth’s orbit. First discovered in 2009, the planet is about two-point-four times the size of Earth and has a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.

NASA’s Kepler science team reported 54 habitable zone planet candidates in February this year, but Kepler 22b is the first one to be confirmed.
