Japanese media report that the Tsuruga nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture was built on an active fault where an earthquake could occur at anytime.

Japanese media quoted an investigation being carried out by Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, which cites the possibility that the nuclear plant has a fundamental problem.

The Tsuruga nuclear power plant opened in 1987, but operations have been suspended since a checkup last August.

Once the investigation wraps up, the nuclear power plant is likely to be decommissioned.
