South Korea is exerting continued efforts over the labeling of the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan at the 18th general assembly of the International Hydrographic Organization(IHO) in Monaco.
The Japanese delegation to the general meeting proposed on Wednesday forming a working-level group to draw up a revised edition of the IHO's publication, the "Limits of Oceans and Seas," based on a 1953 edition.
The proposal was put to a vote and only Japan voted for it, while other countries rejected the proposal or abstained.
South Korea’s delegation, on its part, reiterated that the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan should be jointly labeled as “East Sea,” explaining the title was robbed from Korea during Japan’s colonial rule of the peninsula.
Currently, the body of water east of Korea is solely labeled the "Sea of Japan."
With South Korea and Japan failing to find common ground, the IHO will seek to produce a solution over the label issue on the fourth day of the general assembly on Thursday, Korea time.
