Mad Cow Inspection Team Arrives in U.S.

A joint government and civic team from South Korea has arrived in the U.S. to inspect the safety of U.S. beef following a confirmed case of mad cow disease in California.

The team arrived at Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C. Tuesday morning, local time.

Heading the delegation is Joo Yi-seok, the head of the Animal, Plant and Fisheries Quarantine and Inspection Agency, who said the team will inspect necessary areas relating to the Korean people's health and safety.

He said they will check overall aspects of production including stock feeds to verify whether U.S. beef exported to Korea is being produced safely.

The team comprising government officials and civilian experts will visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wednesday to discuss how they will conduct field inspections.

On Thursday, they will visit the National Veterinary Services Laboratories in the state of Iowa to be briefed on the findings of the latest confirmed case.

The team will also visit California to inspect farms, feed factories and slaughter houses.

But visiting the farm where the case of mad cow disease was reported is expected to be difficult as the farm owner objects.
