The UN Security Council is reportedly considering extending a deadline for its North Korea sanctions committee to submit a list of North Korean entities that would face further sanctions.
A UN official said Tuesday that the Security Council is mulling extending the deadline by a couple of days as China has yet to submit its list.
On April 16th, the Security Council ordered the sanctions committee to report to it within 15 days on the expanded list of entities subject to sanctions, including asset freezes, travel bans and embargo on weapons and weapons production materials. The council issued the order shortly after unanimously adopting a presidential statement condemning North Korea’s launch of a long-range rocket on April 13th. The deadline is Tuesday.
UN officials are said to believe that China is unlikely to oppose strengthening sanctions against the North as it had supported the council’s efforts in adopting the presidential statement condemning the North’s rocket launch.
Meanwhile, South Korea, the United States, Japan and the European Union submitted on Tuesday a list of 40 North Korean entities that they believe should be sanctioned. The names of entities on the list were not revealed.
