A Japanese newspaper reports that seven out of ten Japanese people are willing to endure limited electricity use that could result from the nation's shutdown of nuclear power plants.
Japan’s Mainichi Shimbun asked one-thousand Japanese people on May fifth and sixth if they would be willing to accept inconveniences posed by the shutdown of plants. Japan has since switched off it's last nuclear reactor on Monday.
Seventy-four percent said they could endure the cutback if shutdowns caused a power shortage this summer. Thirty-one percent said they support the reoperation of nuclear power plants that receive regular safety checks, while 63 percent expressed opposition to bringing nuclear power plants back online.
Only 16 percent said they trust the Japanese government’s standards to make decisions on resuming the use of the plants. The paper concluded that although the Japanese government wants to restart nuclear power plants as soon as possible, Japanese people are leaning toward their shutdown.
