Survey: Concentration of US Bases in Okinawa is Unfair

A Japanese daily reports that a majority of people living in Okinawa think it is unfair for the island to house 74 percent of U.S. bases in Japan.

Japan’s Mainichi Shimbun asked 800 Okinawa residents about the concentration of U.S. bases on the island, and 69 percent complained that the situation is discriminatory.

The newspaper’s nationwide survey on the same subject found that 33 percent of Japanese people feel the same way. However, 67 percent expressed opposition to the relocation of U.S. bases to their neighborhoods.

The surveys were conducted ahead of the 40th anniversary of the return of Okinawa to Japan on May 15th.
