S. Korean Builders to Face Eased Restrictions in Advancing into Saudi Arabia

Domestic construction companies will face eased restrictions in advancing into the Saudi Arabian housing market.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs says Saudi Arabia’s Housing Minister Shuwaish bin Saud Al-Duwaihi promised to give special benefits to Korean builders, such as an exemption of gaining permission to engage in construction activities in Saudi Arabia. The minister is visiting Seoul to discuss South Korea's participation in the 500-thousand home development project in the Arabic country.

Accordingly, Korean builders will be able to directly take part in the bidding of construction projects without an agent starting as early as July. Korean constructers believe this will pave the way for them to win a large part of Saudi Arabia’s project, whose bidding is scheduled sometime this year.

Korean construction firms have faced limitations in taking part in bidding processes due to high entry barriers in the Saudi Arabian construction sector, such as the classification grades that foreign construction companies were required to obtain to do business in the nation.
