Candlelight Vigil Marks 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre

A massive candlelight vigil was held in Hong Kong on Monday to commemorate the Tiananmen Square protest in Beijing 23 years ago.

Tens of thousands of people participating in the rally at Victoria Park mourned those killed during the Chinese government’s crackdown on the pro-democracy protest on June fourth, 1989.

Organizers said 180-thousand people took part in the two-hour candlelight vigil, which began at 8 p.m. on Monday. It is the largest number of people ever to turn out for a Tiananmen Square commemorative rally.

The vigil was also attended by a person who lost his legs when a tank driven by Chinese government forces ran over him during the crackdown.
