'S.Korea Plans to Buy Cutting-edge Weapons from U.S.'

The South Korean government is apparently in the market for cutting-edge weapons from the U.S.

A source in the U.S. says the U.S. Department of Defense told Congress it recently received a request from South Korea for the purchase of cluster bombs and associated parts worth 325 million dollars.

The department reportedly said that South Korea wants to buy Wind Corrected Munition Dispensers, captive air training missiles, dummy air training missiles and related parts. The main contractor is U.S. aerospace and defense developer Textron Systems.

The Department of Defense also reportedly said in a letter to Congress that South Korea will use the requested weapons to modernize its military and reinforce long-range defense capabilities. The department added that South Korea’s purchase of the weapons will not shift the military balance in the region.
