Chinese Media Protests S.Korea's Criticism on Length of Great Wall

Chinese media and academia have protested against South Korea’s critical views on China’s recent claims regarding the length of its Great Wall.

Chinese daily The Global Times on Friday said that South Korea voiced concerns over China’s latest announcement on the figure for the length of the Great Wall. According to the latest archeological survey conducted by China’s State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the former State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, the conventional theory that the Great Wall ends at Shanhaiguan near Beijing is inaccurate and that there are a number of fortresses much older than the Great Wall.

The Chinese paper also quoted scholars as saying that China is a multi-ethnic nation and fortresses in the nation were built by different ethnic groups at different times, claiming that all the remains and cultures, including those of Korea’s ancient kingdom of Goguryeo, belong to China.

China’s latest figure on the length of the structure on Thursday was revised to 21-thousand-196 kilometers, which shows that the ancient bulwark is more than two times longer than previously thought.
