Samsung Elec, Apple Dominate Smartphone Market in Q1

Samsung Electronics and Apple have garnered more than 90 percent of market profits in the global smartphone market together.

According to market analysis group ABI Research, the two electronics giants produced 41 percent more smartphones during the first quarter of the year than they did during the same period in two-thousand-eleven at 144.6 million.

Samsung Electronics was the largest producer with 43 million smartphones, with Apple following closely behind with 35 million handsets.

Nokia ranked third with eleven-point-nine million smartphones and Research in Motion, which produces Blackberry phones, had eleven-point-one million.

Samsung Electronics and Apple had a 55 percent market share together, but took away more than 90 percent of profits.
