Rodney King Found Dead in California

Rodney King, the victim of an infamous police beating two decades ago in Los Angeles, was found dead on Sunday morning. He was 47.

Local police said that King was first found by his fiancée, Cynthia Kelly, at the bottom of a pool in Rialto, California. He was found unconscious.

King was severely beaten by several Los Angeles police officers on March third, 1991, after driving under the influence and disobeying police officers’ orders to park his car. The beating was videotaped by a bystander and later aired on news stations in the U.S. and around the world.

The police officers were later tried in a state court for the beating; three of them were acquitted. The acquittals of the police officers escalated tensions between the local black community and the Los Angeles Police Department, sparking the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, which left more than 50 people dead.
