U.S. Food Aid Conditions for N. Korea Tightened

The U.S. Senate has approved a revised bill that seeks to tighten conditions for providing food assistance to North Korea.

According to diplomatic sources on Thursday, the revised bill on agriculture bans the use of funds made available in the provision of food aid to the North, according to the Food for Peace Act.

However, the bill allows exceptions in the event the U.S. administration believes providing assistance would meet U.S. national interests, and the president gets congressional approval to provide food assistance to the North.

The revised bill was jointly submitted by Senators John Kerry and Richard Lugar. The bill passed in a 59-40 vote.
