Russia to Investigate Possible Radioactive Contamination

A Russian daily reports that the Russian government will conduct an investigation to see if the waters near its Maritime Province and the Kamchatka Peninsula are contaminated with radioactive substances leaked from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

According to the Izvestia, Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry made the decision under concerns that radioactive materials leaked from the Fukushima nuclear power plant could possibly have spread to the East Sea or the Sea of Okhotsk.

Quoting experts, the Russian newspaper estimates that the Fukushima nuclear crisis is likely to have released some 70-thousand times more radioactive substances into the air and seas than were released during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
