Japanese media say late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il ordered his government to mass-produce atomic bombs while falsely promising the outside world nuclear materials would only be used peacefully.
Quoting an internal document from the Workers’ Party of North Korea, Japanese newspapers the Tokyo Shimbun and the Mainichi Shimbun said Kim placed top priority on mass production of nuclear weapons with highly enriched uranium.
The dailies reported this is the first time that an official North Korean document affirms the former North Korean leader's order for the development of uranium-based atomic bombs.
The Tokyo Shimbun also said the North Korean document explained that current North Korean leader Kim Jong-un significantly strengthened his Cabinet’s power and put it fully in charge of economic affairs.
The daily predicted that North Korea will likely introduce new economic policies in the near future, saying that Kim ordered the Workers’ Party, North Korea’s supreme leadership body, to respect the Cabinet’s decisions on the economy as much as possible.
