US May Reduce Nuclear Arsenal

The U.S. government is considering a reduction of nuclear warheads in the field to somewhere between one-thousand and one-thousand-100.

Former and incumbent U.S. government officials taking part in talks on a reduction say the U.S. government will likely announce a plan to cut the number of warheads this month. They say Washington reached the decision after concluding that holding a massive number of nuclear weapons is not suitable in the post-Cold War and antiterrorism age.

But some observers predict that the White House may delay announcing a reduction plan until after this November’s presidential election, as the Republican Party could oppose a cut citing President Obama's lack of understanding of a stable nuclear deterrent.

The U.S. now has about five-thousand nuclear warheads, and one-thousand-737 are deployed for potential use.
