Mexican Pres.-elect Pledges to Continue Antidrug War

Mexican President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto is pledging to continue the current government’s antidrug offensive.

The Mexican president-elect said in an interview with foreign reporters that he will continue the current government’s policy to crack down on drug rings and arrest hardened criminals. But he added that he will introduce a new strategy to produce the instant results Mexican society expects.

Analysts say Nieto's remarks come as the incumbent government has been under fire for its prolonged offensive against drug trafficking organizations that has claimed many lives.

Some observers had expressed concerns that if Nieto and his Institutional Revolutionary Party take power, the Mexican government would return to the past when it maintained social stability and security through reaching under the-table deals with criminal organizations.
