UN Chief Calls on Iran's Leaders to Ease Int’l Concerns over Nuke Program

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging Iran to prove to the international community that its nuclear development program is for peaceful purposes.

In a meeting with Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the nation's Supreme Leader, in Tehran, Ban asked them to ease international concerns about Iran's nuclear development. The UN chief is visiting Iran to attend the 16th Nonaligned Movement (NAM) Summit.

Ban also asked for Iran’s active role in ending violence in Syria.

Iranian media report that Khamennei responded by saying the only solution to the Syrian situation is to block the transport of weapons to Syrian antigovernment rebels.
