APEC Summit Closes with Vladivostok Declaration

The 20th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit has closed after adopting a declaration committing to liberalization of trade and investment and regional economic integration.

Twenty-one leaders of Asia-Pacific nations adopted the Vladivostok Declaration on the afternoon of September 9th before wrapping up two days of discussions in the Far Eastern Russian port city.

In the declaration, the summit participants pledged to work together to promote economic growth and fiscal health.

The declaration also welcomed the results of the recent G20 summit and vowed to work for sustainable and balanced growth, job creation and promotion of welfare.

During the second session of the APEC summit earlier in the day, the summit leaders held discussions on strengthening global food security, and countermeasures to soaring grain prices and possible eggflation.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak proposed a series of cooperative ways for the APEC countries to combat the recent hikes in international crop prices which he said have more impact on developing countries.

The proposals Lee made include a ban on food export restrictions by food producing countries, restraints on converting crops for the production of biofuel, enhancement of transparency in crop trading markets, and prevention of speculation in international crop markets.

APEC leaders also discussed promoting innovative growth, cooperation in the field of science and technology, and support for small and medium-sized firms' efforts for innovation.
