French President François Hollande is criticizing the head of luxury goods behemoth Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) for trying to avoiding tax hikes.
As the chairman of the LVMH group, Bernard Arnault is France’s richest man and said to be seeking Belgian citizenship in an attempt to avoid the French government’s new drive to slap the nation’s wealthiest people with higher taxes.
The French president said in a TV news conference that Arnault should carefully think about the meaning of holding dual citizenship, calling on him to be patriotic at a time when France is in trouble.
Hollande said the new tax hike will target two or three thousand wealthy people and high-income earners, including sports stars who are paid a fortune in annual salaries.
The French president said the government’s budget for next year will be the tightest in 30 years and raising the tax by 20 billion euros will be inevitable. He said that the French government will levy more taxes on large corporations and high-income earners to increase its tax income.
