U.S. business magazine Forbes has published an article offering an explanation behind the global popularity of singer Psy's megahit single "Gangnam Style."
In a piece titled, "How Gangnam Style Has Britney Spears (And Everyone Else) Dancing With PSY From Korea," contributing writer Anthony Wing Kosner gives four reasons behind "Psy syndrome."
Kosner explains that Gangnam Style has a bunch of things going for it. He said first off, Psy is a genuine star, calling him "funny and personable but also rhythmically acute."
In his second point, Kosner says the "Gangnam Style dance is easy to do badly, but requires a little skill to do well." He notes "this low barrier of entry makes it easy to get started with but hard to let go of."
Thirdly, Kosner says the song and dance have intergenerational appeal. And lastly, Kosner says the fact that the song is sung almost completely in Korean makes it open to interpretation (and mis-interpretation) in viral ways.
