S. Korea, Japan FMs Meet in New York

South Korea and Japan’s foreign ministers have met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan on Thursday reiterated South Korea’s stance regarding the Dokdo islets and women who were forced to serve as sex slaves for Japanese soldiers during World War Two when he met with Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba.

In particular, Kim made clear that there is no need for the Dokdo issue to be referred to a third party because the islets are not a disputed area. His comments come after Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said Wednesday that territorial disputes must be handled in line with international laws, and that UN members must accept the International Court of Justice’s compulsory jurisdictions.

Kim is set to mention wartime sexual slavery and Japan’s distorted view of history when he speaks at the UN General Assembly on Saturday morning, Korea time.
