Korean Movies Gaining Popularity in Russia

South Korean film director Kim Ki-duk’s award-winning movie “Pieta” is being screened at a movie theater in Moscow.

A thousand Russian movie fans flock to watch the South Korean flim despite the high ticket price of 15-thousand won.

Kim Ki-duk is leading the boom for South Korean movies in Russia.

The popularity of Kim’s movies has grown overseas on the back of Pieta winning the Golden Lion award for best film at the 69th Venice International Film Festival in September.

Movies are now considered another force to further fuel the boom for Korean pop culture overseas, following in the wake of K-pop's success.

K-pop is especially popular among young women in Russia. But people from all age groups like Korean movies, raising the potential for Korean films to appeal to more foreigners.
