Bodies of Volunteers Killed By Lightning to Return Home Wed. Night

The bodies of two South Korean volunteer workers who were killed in a lightning strike in the mountains of Sri Lanka will return home on Wednesday night.

The state-run Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) said the countermeasures team it sent to Sri Lanka following the accident transported the bodies of 24-year-old Jang Mun-jeong and 22-year-old Kim Yeong-wu from a funeral home in Colombo to Bandaranaike International Airport on Tuesday afternoon.

The plane carrying the remains of Jang and Kim left from Colombo early Wednesday and will arrive at Incheon International Airport around 9 p.m. after passing through Hong Kong.

The two volunteer workers’ bereaved family members and members of the KOICA countermeasures team will also return home aboard the same flight.

KOICA members were meeting in the mountainous Haputale region, 170 kilometers from Colombo, around 5:30 p.m. Saturday to exchange volunteering information when the group was struck by lightning.
