Japan May Propose Compromise for Island Dispute with China

A source says that the Japanese government is reviewing a compromise to settle a diplomatic conflict with China over a group of islands in the East China Sea.

In the compromise, Japan will maintain its stance that there is no official territorial dispute with China over the islands, known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese, since they are part of Japanese territory. But Tokyo will acknowledge that China claims sovereignty to the islands.

The source said, however, that it is uncertain if the Chinese government will accept the compromise.

Japan began considering a compromise after the fourth ranking member of the Chinese Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee, Jia Qinglin, urged Japan to acknowledge the territorial dispute between the two countries in a meeting with a Japanese delegation to China.
