Nuke Envoys of S.Korea, US, Japan to Meet Next Week

The chief nuclear envoys of South Korea, the United States and Japan will hold talks in Tokyo next week to discuss their cooperation on North Korea’s nuclear issue.

The trilateral working-level talks set for Tuesday and Wednesday would be the first such meetings held in five months. The talks will also mark the first meeting since bilateral relations between South Korea and Japan soured over the issue of the Dokdo islets and wartime sexual slavery perpetrated by Japan.

The planned talks are expected to provide a good opportunity for Seoul and Tokyo to assess the possibility of normalizing bilateral diplomatic channels. The meeting will likely offer the same opportunity for all three nations.

The talks will be attended by South Korea’s chief nuclear envoy Lim Sung-nam, U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Policy Glyn Davies and Director General of Asia Bureau of Japan's Foreign Ministry Shinsuke Sugiyama.
