Turkey Grounds Syrian Air Flight in Ankara

Local media in Turkey say a Syrian Air jetliner is being held at an airport in Ankara on suspicion it could be carrying heavy weapons.

The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation said Turkey’s F16 fighter jets on Wednesday intercepted the Syrian Air flight on its way from Moscow when it entered Turkish airspace. The plane was then escorted to Esenboga Airport in Ankara.

The report said 35 people were aboard the plane and that it is suspected of carrying heavy weapons to Syria.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said it is currently investigating the plane but did not elaborate on details.
