South Korea has ranked first out of 155 countries for the second consecutive year in terms of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and uptake.

South Korea placed first on the ICT Development Index (IDI) that was issued by the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on Thursday.

Sweden came in second followed by Denmark, Iceland and Finland. Among Asian countries, Japan ranked eighth, Hong Kong eleventh and Singapore 12th.

The index is based on three sub-indices concerning information and communication technology, including access, use and skills. South Korea ranked first in terms of ICT use and skills and eleventh in ICT access.

The index is used to assess the digital divide, ICT performance and growth potential among ITU member countries.
