Norway Questions Nobel Peace Prize Selection System

Norway, which is home to the Nobel Peace Prize, is said to have questioned the award's selection system after the European Union won this year’s prize.

Norway says that the decision was made ignoring the Norwegian people’s sentiment, who voted twice against joining the EU.

Akhtar Chaudhry, a vice president of parliament and a member of the Socialist Party, said the "Nobel Committee shows itself as being out of step with the Norwegian people," who have rejected the EU as a concept.

The EU’s win is also raising controversy within Europe, as some people in the region say it's inappropriate for the EU to win the prize amid the ongoing debt crisis and social unrest.

Former Labor Prime Minister and Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said that there is nothing wrong with the selection system, citing that the 27-nation group had transformed Europe from "a continent of war to a continent of peace."
