Austrian Becomes 1st Skydiver to Break Sound Barrier

Professional daredevil Felix Baumgartner has made a successful freefall from the stratosphere at an altitude of more than 38 kilometers.

On Sunday, the Austrian flew in a giant helium balloon and reached a point 39 kilometers above the U.S. state of New Mexico, two and a half hours after his takeoff. He jumped out of a capsule attached to the balloon and successfully landed on ground.

During his jump, Baumgartner reached a speed of one-thousand-110 kilometers an hour within seconds, becoming the first skydiver to go faster than the speed of sound.

It took just under ten minutes for him to descend with a free fall of four minutes and 20 seconds. He used a parachute only for the last one-thousand-500 meters.
