US Official Warns N. Korea Against Scrapping 2005 Accord

U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Policy Glyn Davies has warned that North Korea would be making a big mistake if it scraps the September 19th, 2005 Joint Statement.

Davies made the remark to reporters when he arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday to attend a policy consultation meeting with South Korea and Japan’s chief nuclear envoys.

Davies made the remark after being asked to comment on U.S. media reports that Pyongyang hinted to Washington the possibility of scrapping the 2005 agreement.

In August, U.S. magazine, Foreign Policy, said North Korean officials told U.S. officials during a private meeting in Singapore in July that Pyongyang is no longer interested in accords reached in the past regarding denuclearization.

In the 2005 agreement, the North pledged to scrap all of its programs on developing nuclear weapons and to return to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
