South Korea’s Ambassador to the UN Kim Sook says South Korea will actively take part in addressing issues related to the Korean Peninsula.
Kim made the remark to reporters shortly after South Korea won a seat in the UN Security Council (UNSC) as a nonpermanent member on Thursday.
Kim said that as a UNSC nonpermanent member, South Korea will devote itself to promoting world peace and the international community’s stability as well as establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula and resolving the North’s nuclear issue.
Kim said that before advancing into the UNSC, South Korea conveyed its stance on contentious issues, including the North’s nuclear weapons program, through the U.S. and other countries. He said the South will now play an active role in addressing issues related to the Korean Peninsula over its two-year term.
Kim said South Korea is closely watching the North, and he vowed to work to maintain peace and stability in Northeast Asia.
