South Korea and the United States have agreed to devise tailored deterrence strategies to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.
Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin and U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta unveiled the agreement in a joint statement that was issued after the 44th Security Consultative Meeting in Washington Wednesday.
The two officials said that as part of the strategies, their countries will use not only their conventional strength but also the U.S.’s nuclear capability to address threats from North Korea. The two sides agreed to devise substantial ways to operate such strategies by 2014.
Also during Wednesday’s meeting, Kim and Panetta stressed the need for the North to observe the Northern Limit Line. The two officials also agreed to complete the transfer of wartime operational control from the U.S. to South Korea by 2015 as planned. Through the transfer they aim to establish a new combined command method in addition to having a military system where South Korea’s military leads and U.S. forces provide support.
