Russian Gov’t Adopts Strong Internet Law

The Russian government has enforced a law to shut down Web sites that are harmful to children without going through judiciary procedures.

Russian authorities said that the law is aimed at protecting children from Internet sites promoting pornography, drug use and teenage suicide.

Human rights organizations are strongly opposing the law, saying that it will strengthen the Russian government’s online censorship.

The bill was approved by the Duma and signed by President Vladimir Putin in July.
