Peace Group Challenges EU’s Reception of 2012 Nobel Peace Prize

The European Union continues to receive criticism for winning this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

The International Peace Bureau, the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1910, challenged the Nobel Committee’s selection of the EU as this year’s winner. It complained in a letter it sent to the committee on Monday that awarding the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize to the EU is unlawful.

The EU was chosen as this year’s recipient in mid-October.

The International Peace Bureau said that the EU is not one of the champions of peace and doesn't work for disarmament. The bureau criticized the EU for being highly militarized and waging wars rather than pushing for alternative approaches.

The Nobel Committee said that there were opinions opposing the selection of the EU as the 2012 winner, but it will not overturn its decision.
