The BBC reports the UN and the Arab League’s joint envoy for Syria said he fears Syria could turn into a new Somalia.

The broadcaster says Lakhdar Brahimi delivered the warning in an interview with London-based pan-Arab al-Hayat newspaper. Brahimi also warned of a scenario in which warlords and militias fill a political void left by a collapsed state unless the Syrian conflict is resolved as soon as possible.

The envoy said that the UN Security Council is promoting a binding resolution calling for political change in Syria.
