S. Korea, Russia Begin Talks on Alaska Pollack Quota

Written: 2012-11-13 08:34:14Updated: 2012-11-13 17:40:39

South Korea and Russia have launched talks in Moscow on setting a fishing quota for Alaska pollack in Russian waters by Korean fisherman.

Ahead of the negotiations that began Monday, Russia warned it could deprive South Korea of a quota for catching Alaska pollack. Russia claims that South Korea overlooks the distribution of crabs in South Korea that were illegally caught in Russian waters by Cambodian fishing vessels, and sold as Japanese crabs.

South Korea’s delegation to the talks pledged to boost efforts on verifying the origin of imported crabs, but both sides remain at odds over when and how to introduce a verification system.

If Russia does not allot South Korea a fishing quota for Alaska pollack at the ongoing negotiations, the price of the pollack is expected to surge ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
